Maleng 5 is an in-progress graphic memoir that investigates the relationship between a patient and caregiver who have different types of bipolar disorder. It’s illustrated to show two perspectives, one real and one delusional, during my partner’s acute psychotic break and the slow years of recovery after his hospitalization. This story looks at bipolar disorder as a diverse spectrum and validates the trauma of both patient and caregiver while acknowledging how those roles have to be adaptable when both partners live in mercurial states of mental health. Here are some initial drawings and sketches for this project.
